American Indian Tribes and Organizations, Title VI Indian Education Program Coordinators, NC University Financial Aid Offices, High School Guidance Departments, and Community College Financial Aid Offices

 

United Tribes of North Carolina believes in promoting educational opportunities for American Indian Students. Since creating the United Tribes Scholarship Award, over $175,000 has been awarded to deserving students pursuing higher education degrees. We are proud to continue this worthwhile tradition.

Instructions for Applicants

*  Applicants must be American Indian residing in North Carolina and enrolled in a North Carolina state recognized tribe or a federally recognized tribe in North Carolina*.

*NC State recognized tribes and organizations: Coharie Indian Tribe, Cumberland County Association for Indian People, Guilford Native American Association, Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Meherrin Indian Tribe, Metrolina Native American Association, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony, Triangle Native American Society, Waccamaw-SiouanIndians—federally recognized tribe(s) in North Carolina: Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

 

* Applicant must be an incoming freshman enrolling in a two-year or four-year college or university, and/or freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior who is enrolled and still attending a two-year or four-year college or university.

 

* Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students.

 

* Only completed applications will be accepted for consideration. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

 

* Applicants must apply for all other sources of funding for which they are eligible.

 

* Applications will be competitive. We expect to award five or more $500.00 scholarships for Fall 2025.

 

* The screening committee will use a point system to score the applications on academic achievement, grade point average, career plans, American Indian activities, extracurricular activities, community involvement, references, and essay.

*  Winners will be announced on Saturday, March 8th, 2025 at the 50th Annual Unity Conference Scholarship Breakfast held in the Koury Convention Center 3121 W, Gate City Blvd. Greensboro, NC

​

* A student who has previously received the United Tribes Scholarship once will not be eligible to receive it again in any category.

 

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on  Monday, February 3, 2025

  1. Applicants must be American Indian residing in North Carolina and enrolled in a state or federally recognized tribe.

  2. Applicants must be an incoming freshmen enrolling in a two-year or four-year college or university, and/or freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior who is enrolled and still attending a two-year or four-year college or university.

  3. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students.

  6. Applicants must be competitive. We expect to award five more $500.00 scholarships for Fall 2025.

  10. APPLICATION MUST BE RECEIVED BY 5:00 P.M. ON Monday, January 27, 2025

Additional Documentation: Please provide the following supporting documents:

1. Proof of your status as an American Indian (tribal enrollment card or letter from your North Carolina state or federally recognized tribe in NC or tribal organization verifying that cultural identity has been maintained by the applicant).

2 Academic Certification (See top of page) must be completed and signed by a counselor or principal.

3.Three letters of recommendation; one letter from a community leader, one from a school counselor or advisor, and one letter from a teacher or instructor. Please do not use family members as a reference.

4. An essay: Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve in your American Indian community. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution (One page only; Responses must be typed)

5. Applicants must apply for all other sources of funding for which they are eligible.

6. If you choose to do so, write a brief statement of any financial hardships you may have.

 

*  Copy of letter of admission/acceptance from a college or university. If a letter is not available, please make a notation and send it as soon as possible. No student will be awarded a scholarship until United Tribes has received “proof of enrollment” from your college.
