About United Tribes of North Carolina

United Tribes of North Carolina's mission is to promote educational, economic, religious, charitable, and cultural activities for American Indian people. We are a 501(c) 3 nonprofit corporation established in 1982 to provide greater coordination and unity among American Indian tribes and organizations of the State of North Carolina.

United Tribes of North Carolina's objectives are to:

  • Increase awareness of American Indian issues

  • Provide a forum to develop strategies to address challenges faced by American Indians in North Carolina

  • Celebrate the traditional and contemporary history of American Indians in North Carolina

  • Promote resources and opportunities beneficial to our State's American Indian population

  • Reclaim our heritage

United Tribes of North Carolina activities include the sponsorship of the annual North Carolina Indian Unity Conference and the annual Miss Indian North Carolina Pageant. We provide support as needed to the North Carolina Senior Citizen Coalition, the North Carolina Native American Youth Organization, and the North Carolina Native American Council on Higher Education.  UTNC coordinates the production of the annual North Carolina Indian Heritage Month poster, and provides scholarships to outstanding American Indian students.

United Tribes of North Carolina is governed by a 13 member Board of Directors representing the 8 state recognized tribes and 4 urban Indian centers of North Carolina, as well as Legal Aid of North Carolina (Pembroke office).  We are an IRS tax exempt agency and all contributions by individuals, corporations and organizations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
